In 2014, my finger was fractured in a horrific t-bone accident I was deemed not at fault for. I went from attending university classes to attending countless physiotherapy and rehabilitation appointments. But just as useful as those appointments were for my poor finger, the counseling I received as a result of my accident help me re-achieve my peace of mind.
1. Helps address and understand fears
I had never been a fearful driver. But after an unexpected hit, you can’t help but feel paranoid. Talking to someone about my new fear of driving helped me understand where it was all coming from and more importantly, how to talk myself out of being afraid while being on the road.
2. Gets rid of self-guilt
After the accident, I continued to wonder what I could have done to prevent it. Despite being deemed not at fault, I couldn’t help but feel like I could have avoided it. Talking to someone about the guilt that comes after an accident is the key to relinquishing it and understanding that some things are unavoidable.
3. Helps you move forward
I spent months being angry at the driver that hit me. The anger from the accident transcended into other areas of my life. Holding on to negative emotions after an accident is understandable, but unnecessary. Addressing your emotions and feelings and learning to let go is crucial to moving forward after an accident. Therapy can help.
